Competence before mobilisation

Preparing people alongside the equipment they will operate.

Crew readiness is more than a complete travel manifest. Training, role familiarity and an understanding of the specific rig all affect the quality of the first offshore shift.

Managers should review competence against the actual work programme. Where new equipment or unusual tasks are involved, familiarisation needs time and a defined learning objective.

A mobilisation plan should make room for practical questions. People who can challenge an unclear instruction are better prepared than people who have only acknowledged a document.
